CURE Clergy United for Renewal in East Baltimore
I wish above all things that you may prosper and
be in health, even as thy soul prosper. III John 2
Welcome! We are blessed to work together in the East Baltimore community. Every person deserves to live in a healthy and protective community. CURE pledges to assure the safest environment and best care we can nurture. Through our Heart, Body, and Soul health program and through PULSE (People United to Live in a Safe Environment), CURE already serves and commits to make our work strong and enduring. All faiths are welcome and our work is for the benefit of ALL neighborhoods in East Baltimore. Our primary efforts have been health and well-being.
There are at least 230 churches and faith centers in the 30 census tracts in East Baltimore, with about 150,000 people, nearly 80% African American. We also welcome a growing Latin American community. Ours is a community of loving people, world-renowned health care, and accomplished faith leaders and pastors.
Still we are located within a seriously stressed community with among the worst health and violence statistics in the nation. Recently, a huge piece of our landscape has been destroyed, and with it the homes and lives of many of our residents. We stand ready to assure that its regrowth will bring tangible opportunities and improve the well-being of our people. It is our goal to work with diverse partners to assure that our community reaps the benefits of the growth we expect to occur in health care and research. We indicate our intent to take part in decisions, create new and successful ventures that we manage within our own community, and most importantly we will strive to make East Baltimore a good and happy place to live.
As faith leaders and pastors, we are will work selflessly, 'all for one, and one for all.' We keep our eyes on the goal and look to our churches for support and to God for guidance.
Pastors are the shepherds of our people and healers of the spirit. We can also heal our community's ills and bring hope. So often a beacon of hope appears in our community, only for the light to go out. We support one another's rights to be a part of each and every part of the renewal and growth we expect and to assure that it truly benefits our people.
We pledge to:
-- lead our people to better health services that are sensitive to our community needs, using models we
ourselves have fostered
-- serve as advocates for the best quality social services linked to health care
-- create opportunities for alternative health services for substance abuse prevention and treatment.
-- assure beneficial community development that is inclusive
-- create career ladders, training, and jobs for our people, particularly youth,
-- devote ourselves to rehabilitation for those among us who are wounded and sick.
Most importantly, the health of our children, their schools, and their caregivers stand at the forefront of our work to assure education and training opportunities. We are not searching merely for entry level jobs; rather we are dedicated to building a career ladder that will make it possible for our youth to grow into leaders in many disciplines, those that are open to all of America.
While we know that each group must also work on behalf of their own needs, we also hold a covenant that we are stronger together than we are apart. The road to healing is not always paved with smooth stones. CURE makes a pledge to face any difficult situations together and to build our Heart, Body, and Soul program under CURE'S leadership, to help Collington Square restore the highly successful outreach and substance abuse care programs at the Mattie B. Uzzle Outreach Center, and to foster new programs together. We work toward ownership of our own solutions, with our partners from a variety of community institutions joining equitably. There is no power greater than God's.
"Please hear the call.
"United we must stand, or divided we fall."
In His Name.
